History

The club was founded in 1897 on its current site to focus on river sailing and racing.

Various classes have developed at the club over the years, notably our own unique one design Lapwings (from 1947), the Loch Long (since the early 1960s), Flying Fifteens, Dragons, Wayfarers, Lasers and in recent years the RS K6, Aero, Feva and Tera. For many years we have also had an active cruiser class who sail in the river and to other East Coast destinations.

Our facilities have been extended so that we now have three slipways, a crane, two jetties, an extensive dinghy park, our own moorings and launches. Since 2000 we have also developed our own RYA training centre and training fleet.

Since 2015, we have extended our relationship with the Alde and Ore Association, whose purpose is to preserve and protect the rivers on which we sail. All members of the club are now also granted membership of the Association.

We recently became a private company, managed by its directors who are members of the General Committee.
