Visiting Yachtsman
AYC looks forward to welcoming visiting yachts on your cruise of the East Coast. The mouth of the Rivers Alde & Ore can be a bit challenging. The link below to the East Coast Pilot website gives a useful chart of the entrance, but it is worth bearing in mind that the shingle can move and therefore please be alert when crossing the bar, and even recent charts may be out of date.
Once on the river there’s plenty to enjoy, wildlife, quiet anchorages and lovely walks. You’ll pass Havergate Island Nature Reserve and Europe’s largest vegetated shingle spit. Orford is well worth a stop for its history, pubs and the Butley Oysterage.
Aldeburgh town centre is a 10–15 minute walk north, with shops, restaurants, a cinema and the famous fish and chips. Further upriver are Iken cliffs, and on a rising tide smaller boats can reach Snape Maltings, or it’s an easy dinghy trip.
The club is open 9am–5pm daily in season, with later hours on Wednesdays. Please sign the Visiting Yachtsmen book on arrival to become a temporary member. The bar is well stocked with local Adnams beers and wines, plus food from the Galley (see social section for times).
Visitor moorings are managed by the Harbour Master (RF Upson & Co. 01728 453047). Three buoys lie off the Martello Tower on the eastern side and are the first you’ll reach, please don’t use others without permission. Anchoring is only permitted downriver near the tower; elsewhere is restricted due to ground chains. The Harbour Master’s workshop is just north of the club car park.
For more information, email clubmanager@aldeburghyc.org.uk. We look forward to welcoming you to AYC.
